Oh my oh my...I just hope I'm not too late to cover the story of the Costume Institute Gala night. You may be wondering, what exactly is this "Costume Institute Gala"? As a beginner like me, it is no doubt that a little bit of research is needed. From my glimpse of the overwhelming information on Google, I have some ideas of this whole event.
Let's put it this way: Costume Institute is one of the departments of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. (And according to the almighty Wikipedia, "Blair, Serena, and a few Constance Girls from Gossip Girl usually eat their lunch on the steps of the Met.") It is a place where the essence of the whole fashion world is held. Exhibitions under a certain appointed theme will be held every spring and fall of a year in the Institute. And the Gala is to celebrate the opening of the exhibition and mark the start of the whole event. It is described as the Oscar of the fashion world. (OK. People are so out-of-words to describe huge events, so they call every one of them "the Oscar of blah blah blah".)
The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion is the theme of the spring 2009 exhibition. The exhibition aims to "explores the reciprocal relationship between high fashion and evolving ideals of beauty, focusing on iconic fashion models in the latter half of the 20th century and their roles in projecting, and sometimes inspiring, the fashion of their respective eras." (Quote from MET website)
And information ends here. Let's look at the most important thing of the whole story: FASHION!

I'm actually going back and forth for our queen's outfit of the night. I love her golden Marc Jacobs dress which totally makes her like a goddess. I love her 80s mark-up which is so strong that matches perfectly with the gold and metallic tone. But what's going on with her turban? It just ruins everything.

Another headpiece-ruin-everything case and our victim this time is Madonna. Her LV dress and thigh high boot are edgy, though they are not quite the occasion. But can anyone tell me what kind of headpiece she's wearing? Bunny ears? It is simply a disaster.

I like how Serena the Blake Lively walk on the red carpet. Very sexy, confident and...tall! I just can't help but say: What a body! What a leg! (Yes just A LEG cox I can't see the other.) Her Versace chiffon gown is...um...how to say...I guess, interesting is the word.

Queen B is adorable in a standard runway look of LV. But the look would be perfect if the legging is taken away. I love the sculptured dress which is so energetic, perfect for young and sweet Leighton Meester. But now she looks very clumsy with that legging cox it makes the bottom part so heavy and unbalances the whole outfit. Sometimes, there's a problem with a total look!

Belmain somehow loses its power when it comes to the red carpet. Compare with other glamorous gown, it seems the edginess in the Belmain dresses are out of tune with the event. But after all it is not a bad choice.
To be continued...
